Flatty oil pump removal

I am having a time getting the oil pump off my EAB Flathead. AS usual the shop manual is simplistic " pg 62 remove the oil pump retaining screw( its a bolt ) and remove the pump and strainer assembly". The Ford Flathead V8 Builders Handbook by Frank Otto is a little more instructive , "next remove the lock wire and bolt from the oil pump mounting flange. Remove the assembly from the cylinder block. The pump may not come out easily ......tap it Lightly with soft hammer,.......remove it from recess in the block,.....be careful" .....blablabla.
I got mine to move but it seems the Idler gear ( another part with no mention of how to remove, in shop manual) is keeping it from popping out.

Am I being to careful ???
What am I missing besides experience??
Thanks

It just pulls straight out. You don't need the end plate off. Turn the body with big pliers to break it loose from the block, while pulling out. As I recall it has O-rings that may be stuck to the bore it fits into.

A lot of times they come out hard. Just a result of all that gunky old oil that sorta turns to glue. As Ross indicates, turn it, and pull on it with big pliers...slim

I took one out in pieces. If you got it to move you're almost there. A pipe wrench on the base might help. So will liberal application of solvent. Back and forth movement should do the trick. The stem is hollow so a wrench there can crush the casting.

They can be super tight. I've heard of guys suspending the block an inch or so above the floor from a chain attached to the oil pump and letting the weight of the block help extract the pump.

That's desparate!

There's a chance that the idler gear is so sloppy on its shaft that it's jamming it. If you have the flywheel off, you can pull the idler gear cover and remove the idler.

Well,.....I am still messin with this pump removal. I have soaked it with solvent, turmed and pulled it with channel locks till I cant stand up straight , I have it hanging a bit off a chain to my hoist as MTFlat suggested while turning it with channel locst. I even put a 2X6 on it and whached it with a sledge hammer a few times while suspended. I do have the flywheel off but I dont have a clear shot at the Idler gearshaft from inside the crankcase to knock it out,....unless there is more or less to removing the idler gear. The oil pump is the last thing to get off before I take it to be Tanked. I guess I can just let the machinist remove it. Any last thoughts?

Try taking out the idler gear. If the cam is stuck (valves stuck), it won't let the idler gear turn, so the pump gear can't spin as it drops.

After several unsuccessful attempts to remove oil pump from a 8BA I got out the old trusty BFH. Came out as an assembly, but the housing had cracked. New pump.

Yeah, there seems to come at least one time in the restoration of anything when it's "no more mister nice guy" and out comes the BFH. Then it's time to just go BREAK something!

If you can't fix it with a BFH, it's an electrical problem.
