My gas tank has rust tha I see in my fuel filter. I know the truck sat for years so I'm sure there is rust inside. The outside looks great.
Question. Should I use a sealer product or just replace the whole dang thing?
Thanks for your opinions.
Fred
You can do either one. I just replaced mine with an original repo from Hot Rods truck parts. That way I didn't have to worry about cleaning the old one out and making sure everything got coated good. Side note: If your seeing rust in the filter also replace the steel fuel line. Cause you know the line is full of rust too. If your on a tight budget, there are several good threads on cleaning them out and several good products to coat the inside with. I think you need 2 more post to do a search on here but you can do a google search and it will direct you to the threads on here about cleaning and coating a gas tank. Good luck
EDIT: Also if you go to replace it another option is a fuel tank between the rails. I believe that a lot of guys use mustang tanks. Probably pick that up cheap at a junkyard if they don't knock a hole in them. I know our pull a part does.
Call around a few radiator shops in your area and find out what the cost is to clean and coat the fuel tank. I've had this done on my 52 Panel years ago and had no issues. Of course, I can't buy a repro tank for the Panel truck. Also, don't forget that most repro parts are made in China. Maybe worthwhile to clean and coat the original US made tank.
I just used the POR15 sealer kit and I must say it worked great and had lots of good reviews. Of course you will find the occasional few who it didn't work out well for but that alot of times has to do with not doing it correctly. I did it on a mitusubishi eclipse that I had sitting up for 7 years and the tank had rusted so badly that it even took out the fuel pump which is how I found out how rusty it was once I pulled the pump. I found a guy who also used muratic acid (bought at Home depot for $8). Put in half a jug and filled hte rest with water and let it sit, then periiodically sloshed it around and that cleaned it up very nicely. Then went with the POR treatment. The tank inside looked almost new and I ended up getting the kit on ebay for about $70.
Ok, here is the link where I got the info on how this guy did it and how it turned out. I followed him to the "T" and mine lookes as good an new inside:
