Scanner doest read some live data
1997 4.0. I have a equus 3130 scanner. In live data it shows all the fuel trims show -100 & the the o2's show 0. They show up fine on a different vehicle. Asked tech support & this is what they sent me. "Some vehicles work better in live data then others. Usually the older the vehicle the more likely the problem occurs. The PCM are monitoring vehicle systems etc and it will drop the feed to the tool esentially because it has too much to monitor." Anyone else have the same problem with a 97 or earlier with an equus or actron scanner? Thanks.
I have an Actron CP-9150 kit, that has a CP-9145 scantool in it, that I've used to monitor live feeds on my 94 Taurus ODD-1 & 99 Ranger OBD-2 systems without any problems.
It reads & displays fuel trim, O2 sensor, speed sensor maf sensor, temp sensor, ect, PID's without dropping any data.
Will yours capture & store those parameters in the "snapshot" mode????
The O2 & fuel trim numbers are fast changing parameters, so try monitoring the data low rpm, after the engine has warmed up & idled down & see what happens.
When the engine is first started cold, before the O2 sensors come on line, will it read fuel trim then????

I have the same problem with my brother's 1997 Aerostar. I can read many other live values, but not O2 sensors or fuel trim data. I am looking for a solution as well. My scan tool works just fine on my 1996 Taurus, my dad's 1996 Ranger, my dad's 2000 Dakota, and lots of other vehicles I've used it on.
I think 1996 and 1997 and possibly some 1998 4.0L trucks may have a slightly different OBD-II protocol, or may need computer updates.

Thanks guys for responding to my post. pawpaw if you mean the freeze frame data yes! It will show the fuel trims but it doesn't show the o2's. I just checked it on my sisters 96 crown vic it worked fine.
Khan: What scanner do you have? Funny you said your brothers 97 Aerostar does the same thing. I wonder if it's the 97 year?
It really doesn't make since to me why it would drop the feed. It bothers me though because the fuel trims etc can help diagnose the problem.
Kahn have you talked to tech support to see what they say?

KhanTyraniter: You never said which scanner & model you had actron or the equus? Software version installed if you have the equus? Did you ever talk to tech support about this issue & what was there response?
I haven't tried it but I was curious if it was hooked up to say a Snap-on scanner would still drop the signal like tech support said. If not what's the difference in the tools?
I did send a reply to tech support but haven't heard back.

I'm surprised you said the higher dollar Snap-On did the same thing. That's interesting. Still haven't heard back from Tech support, probably wont. If you tried three with the same results it must be with the vehicle as you stated earlier. It is strange that both are 97 fords though.
pawpaw:It does show fuel trim in freeze frame. I have lean codes(intake leak). They show positive numbers which would be right for the lean condition as it's adding fuel. Is this correct?

Since you have lean codes (might be helful to know what numbers they are) & you suspect you have an intake leak, fix it & see what the fuel trim then tells us is going on, as you may have more than one problem.
pawpaw: I get the p0171 & p0174. Lean bank 1,2. Here is the freeze frame data.

I had a few bumps in the road with my health & then I just moved. Now all my tools are in storage 7 miles away. I'm trying to save to get a storage building so I can have access to my tools. I say it's the intake/fuel rail gaskets as it's seems to be a popular thing on the 97 4.0.

Maybe scroll down this TSB & find your trouble codes & go through the trouble shooting list & post what you find.
