hey guys i have called around the houston area and found a couple places that will changes the gear ratios in the 08 450 work truck....i rarely pull anything and when i do its about 14000 lbs max. usually just have a load of 2000-5000lbs on the flatbed. for me to do this it would be clearly for mileage only....i have 4.88 gears now and want to switch to either 4.10 or 3.73....every mpg counts towards my bottom line as shown in my other thread about taking the dpf off.....any and all advice is welcome....the shop is wanting to charge me 2500 bucks is this high or about right?(they say the rear diff is alot bigger than the 350's and lower that why it more money
2500 seems really high to me. I had my wrangler re-geared and locked for about 1k per axle. I know the axles on the wrangler are smaller, but 2500 just seems crazy. Is that the total price for front and rear axles? 4x4? If so that would be more realistic.
2 wd. They said its a big job and would take 2 days. This at a place that only does drivetrain work. They said if it was a 350's diff it would be about 1000 cheaper. Not sure what size the diff is

Admittedly I don't know much about the innards of a dana 110 but boy that seems like big money for a single axle. Plus, if I recall the 110 has a drop out center like a Ford 9", which means they should be able to pull it and do all the work on the bench. MUCH easier than doing it while in the axle. I think I'd shop around for sure.
Another thought. For not much more than that you could probably have a Gear Vendors overdrive unit installed and keep your gears "just in case". Overdrive when you want it and the low gears when you need it. Win win!

the center does drop out, I second the opinion that you may want to go with a gear vendors overdrive unit!!
Take it Texas Truck Works off of FM1488, they did my gears and only charged me $500 something dollars parts and labor and mine is a 2wd. They're very reasonable and stand behind their work. If they're not busy, they'll have you out within 1-3 hours.

They're blowing smoke where the sun don't shine because they're a specialty shop. Texas Truck Works will do right by you if you're in Houston and have a few hours to kill, just be sure to call ahead so they can get the gears in.
