Mike I always run 5000-5500 miles with Rotella 15w40. OA has been great an I don't worry about it. Good price and you can get it all most any where. I do not live in the Artic so that would make a difference so I would go with the Rotella 5-40 Synthetic I suppose.

Just to back up some of the things said. Mitch works for an oil company and has made many contributions concerning oil.

Someone may want to check into the 'Oil Bible'

I am getting ready to put full synthetic back in mine from the excellent Delo oil I have been running FWIW. I just make sure it is diesel approved.

After these last two changes of regular Delvac and Chevron Delo I'm throwing some Schaeffers 7000 15-40 synthetic blend back in, my truck really seems to like this oil otherwise I'd run the Rotella 5w-40 syn. Happy motoring..

I've been thinking about trying this stuff out. Same oil for the wifes audi and for moms jetta tdi. But itd be pricey to buy 3 jugs of it. Still, id like to experiment and test it for ext lended intervals.

Audi B8 A4 Quattro 2.0T > Maintenance > Engine > Oil > ES#261372 Specific 502.00 / 505.00 / 505.01 (5w-40) - 5 Liter - 842451

Rotella T 6

It is below zero this morning here in Fairbanks and my truck lives outside all the time.

I am running the T-6 from Wally World at $19.50 a gal.

Expensive but cheaper than a engine o/h.

I will change it in the spring and try to remember to do OA and post results.

I have 160K on E99 F350 DD.

I keep it plugged in when it is sub zero

The thing to keep in mind that if you run Rotella syn to 7500 miles instead of 5000 on the dino, the price is exactly the same. Syn is costs 50% more, but you run it 50% longer. Cost per mile is equal. I run Syn Rotella all year, and the truck loves it. Tried some other brands, and kept going back to syn Rotella after not liking how the truck sounded/started/ran.

The Motor Oil Bible may be a good resource, but the world of oil specifications has changed several times in the past 6-7 years, so it will not contain the most up-to-date issues being faced by engine manufacturers. (Besides, I would want to know more about the author/publisher before making an investment in that book.)

In a nutshell... Do not mix oil brands... you can create some unpleasant results on your oil's ability to perform as it should. Also, both the 5w40 full synthetic and 15w40 synthetic blends (or conventional dino) are recognized as appropriate for our engines. Trying to play with your oil viscosity isn't going to gain you anything positive that you cannot get from the products which are currently available.

Regarding your concern over shearing, the synthetics are more shear-resistant tahn the conventional oils, but the synthetic blends can offer excellent shear-resistance as well depending upon which base stocks are blended for the final product.
