i was under the truck and i was pulling myself up the drive way"i was on a creeper" and i grabbed a rod that was by tranny didnt look at what i was grabbing and started to pull myself up and the whole truck shifted back scared the livin day lights out of me i thing i bent somthing having to do with the parking brake becase when it is disengaged the parking brake light comes on and the pedal is a little lose so we tied it up whith some leather string on light turns off is there a replacement part for what i might have grabbed dont even know what it was i slid from under the truck as fast as i could
Sounds more like you grabbed the shift linkage and popped it out of park into reverse or neutral. All the parking brake stuff on these (unless it's a supderduty) are cables, and most of that is on the outside of the frame on the drivers side.
i know i pulled on a solid metal rod so that may be it
but how would i tighten up the parking brake is it like
wire cable like the stuff on bikes where you just pull the wire and
tighten the screw?
First step to getting decent parking brakes on these trucks would be to make sure the rear brakes are in good shape, and properly adjusted. (The automatic adjusters tend to have issues on occasion.) After that the only adjustment is around, or just behind the edge of the cab, where the two cables from the wheels meet the cable from the front. In that cable joiner, there is a threaded section with a nut that can be adjusted.
Not too often it needs adjusted if thigns are in good shape at the rear wheels though. A heads up though too, I broke that adjuster this year putting new cables on my truck, and found out it's obsolete. No luck finding anything locally to replace it with, so I ended up doing some fabricating between old and new stuff to make something that works.
