so the red/green wire going to the ip pump (I do believe that is is the shutoff solenoid?) on the 86 6.9 in my dads f250 has melted off, is it safe to assume that if i don't find a bad spot in the wiring, that the pump will need to be replaced?
Usually if the Shut-Off solinoid goes bad , it just doesn't work at all so the truck won't start. If the wire is melted I would start looking for a point where it had chaffed through the insulation to ground.
If you take a jumper from the battery + terminal straight to the terminal on the IP it should click allowing the fuel to flow and the engine to start.
I do not understand Ford with the Red/Green wire (and others) ... Seems ignorant to me!
From memory ... On the chassis side of the connector it's like 16Ga (Blue 20Ga link) on the motor side of the connector is two wires, one like 14Ga the other like 12Ga.
it still starts and runs, so its not like its completely shorted out or anything, and it doesn't always pull the current to get it hot but when it does the wire gets hot from inside the cab clear up to the pump, even the connector on the pump gets hot. i would guess that if it was shorting out before the pump, causing it to get hot and start frying, that connector wouldn't get hot like it does.
i haven't gotten out to look at it again yet, but i will still check the harness for chaffs anyways.
