the code I received says cam positioner sensor bank 1 malfunction.where is bank 1?I did notice standing in front of vehicle looking at the plug and wires that plug into the sensor that the wire on the right side had a knick in it like It had been cut for some reason .it is a three plug unit so could the right side be bank 1 and the middle be neutral and the left side be bank 2?If it is can I cut and resplice the wires?

Your 5.0L engine is a pushrod engine with a single camshaft for both banks. The three wires are reference voltage (light blue/orange), ground (black/white), and signal (dark blue/orange).

P0340 indicates that Self-Test has detected a Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor circuit failure, but does not specify a particular cylinder bank. The wire to the CMP is shielded, therefore a nick in the wire could be allowing noise in the circuit.

I should add that the information above was gathered from the 1998 Factory Service Manual. I do not have the 1999 FSM. I also looked at the 2000 FSM and in 2000 the CMP was a 2-wire sensor, so maybe there were changes between 1998 and 2000 as well....

Is it just the insulation that's nicked, or are some of the wire strands broken as well?

If you're comfortable the CMP sensor is good and you are good with solder and shrink sleeving, it might be in your best interest to repair the damaged wire. If you were planning to splice the wire using crimp connectors, then you may cause more problems than you fix. If not now, down the road as the crimps corrode.

Is the wire harness to the CMP shielded like the service manual suggests for the 1998? Would you need to cut in to the shielding to repair the wire?

OK that didn"t help at all.I can drive the engine all day as long as it doesn't cut off the light stays off but as soon as the engine is cut off as soon as I restart it the codes come back and the light comes back on.I did notice that there sounded like a little sparknocking when I cut it off though,What is the correct timing on the 98 mercury 5.0 as compared to the 99 explorer 5.0 which is tdc? Also if this is different will it cause the malfunction code.I am at a loss and need some suggestion please. Thanks
