Question keyless entry and remote

I just bought a 2005 F150 from a private party seller. They only had one key and one keypad (lock/unlock/alarm) I need to get another key but was wondering if it is standard to have the chip in this ford. I know duplicate keys with chips are expensive so if you have any suggestions of places that can do it for cheaper that would be great. Also, there is the keypad on the side driver side door. I have the code from the previous owner but want to switch it for security reasons. He does not have the manufacter code to reset it. In the manual it says you have to have this code other wise you take it to the dealership and they charge aroudn $50 to plug the truck into a computer and rest it. Does any body have any ideas of another way to get the code or reset it to my own code? Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to FTE

First of all I recommend you get thoroughly acquainted with your owner's manual. If you don't have one, you can download it here: https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp

The chipped keys aren't expensive (less than $15 on eBay and from other online sources). The problem is without two unique chipped keys, you cannot add another unique key. Adding an additional key and remote entry is detailed in your owner's manual. In your case, you don't have any choice but to go to the dealer IF you want a unique chipped key (which I highly recommend). You can buy the key from an online source, have it cut at most locksmiths and hardware stores, and then take it to the dealer to get it programmed.

Once you have two unique keys, you can add others at your whim. I would order two new chipped keys, have the dealer program one, and you can program the other and store in a safe place.

Some locksmiths can duplicate a chipped key for $50-75. But because it's a duplicate, it cannot be used to add additional keys.

While you're at the dealer, they can also tell you your 5-digit factory security code. Alternatively you can find it on the body security module which is either under the dash or behind the rear seat on the S. cab and S. crew.

Here's a good source of information on PATS: http://www.f150online.com/forums/art...highlight=PATS

And here's a couple of threads I found using the advanced search feature (hint, hint ).

thanks! I will look into the key soon. I talked with the dealer about the code but they said it would cost me additional $$$ (around $60). I will search for it on my truck in the place you suggested and hopefully its there.
