the jobs not bad but isnt fun either.pull the intake.drop the compressor and ps pump.all hose connections and elect.connections.pop it out the hole.make sure that you have something to support the trans when removing.when you stab the engine make sure that the torque converter is pushed all the way in so you dont bust the pump gears.i also usually install a new conveter seal when im in there.good luck.

where did you get your engine? I am looking at having to replace my cylinder head and i am almost thinking that it will be easier and cheaper, in the long run, to replace the engine. do you have any insight on overall cost, and the difficulty of pulling it and then putting in the new one? I heard you have to lift the cab to get the engine out of there is that true?

I personally would pull the rad & support off, then pull the motor & trans together as 1 unit. always found that easier in the long run.

that, and you can leave the intake installed

If you have access to a lift the easiest way is to lift the cab. I'm not sure if the radiator support unbolts easily and I wouldn't do it that way personally. Maybe tylus can chime in any tips for getting it out that way. According to the workshop manual all the cowl parts have to come off to get it out through the top. I would unbolt the ps pump and ac compressor from the engine first and leave them in the truck so you don't have to open any lines.

x2

the trans is also much easier to unbolt and reinstall when on the garage floor (driveway)

Transmission bolts are a pain because of the lack of room for hands, but once it's ready to pull, remove the radiator, cowling, and make sure the torque convertor is unbolted. Even with the cowling and radiator removed there's really not enough room to get the engine out with it still on. Done it myself 10 months ago, and it was definitely the least fun swap I've ever done.

I've heard of guys pulling the cabs on these just like the 6.0L and 6.4L, but I've never done one that way. I've had a few out through the hood, and it's not that bad. Just a little time consuming. I've been lucky and warranty pays for long blocks on every one I've had(very little transfer of parts!)....

The toughest bit was getting the exhaust manifolds off the heads, as it says eleswhere the ring of bolts around the bellhousing trans are a pain as there is no room, it took me 15 hours to remove, never done it before. There is one eighth of an inch gap at front and back when you lift the block out of the bonnet hole. You need a hell of a lift as it goes very high, we used a fork truck. 20 hours to reinstall and run.

Its ALOT of work to pull the core support. I just unbolt the engine from the transmission. Most of the time its a 4x4..... pull the intake off. disconnect the fuel lines, unplug all the wiring stuff. unbolt the PS, and the AC. can be time consuming....

Changing head gasket or motor swap.

I am currently looking into changing my 2003 f150 v8 5.4 passanger side head gasket looking for some tips and a list of tool's and sizes I'll need any input or help would be great also a head bolt torque pattern would be great. I plan on pulling the motor to do the work as it looks the easiest way to do the job.
