Hi,
I'm new to this list. I recently bought a 84 f250 extra cab. A/T, tilt wheel. It needs lots of miscellaneous things done to it. One of the main things right now is starting the truck.
When I bought it, the PO said that you need to push the steering wheel forward at the 2 O'Clock position. I changed out the ignition key tumbler yesterday, and it still does it.
I figure there must be some contacts that are worn, and are connecting when I push the wheel. So my question is, what is worn out and is it replaceable? For now it's my theft prevention security device.
There is a wishbone shaped piece made of cheap pot metal that breaks. It connects the ignition tumbler to the actual switch by way of a rod that runs down the stearing column. It is naot a hard job to replace, just a pain in the a$$, as you have to remove the steering wheel and everything under it clear down to the tilt mechanism.
Hey, new here, joined because I just bought an 89' f-250 w/7.3. and it seems to have the same problem. the guy i got it from said to turn the wheel to the right to get it to start. but after having it for one day it seems to be getting worse. could hardly start it the last time. should i try pushing on the wheel. need to be able to depend on it to make it to work and back tomorrow. HELP!
If it works do it....... other than that under the upper plastic cover you may see the broken part..... push on the part that pushes the ignition switch below. You could just place the truck in park/nuetral brake on, key on and jumper the starter relay large posts.
