Just bought a 96 Ranger with the 2.3L 4cyl and AT with 91k miles. On the way home from buying it the check engine light came on. Auto Zone says they can tell me that it's code P1744 but they couldn't tell me what that means. A quick search on google and I found several answers. Most deal with the TQ converter clutch system malfunction. One says the solenoid malfunctioned the other says it's stuck in the off possition. Any of you fellas know the right answer and how do you fix it? Thanks a bunch!!
I only have my 2000 manual with me now and that doesn't list that number, if you don't get an answer bump the post back up and I'll look it up in the 96 manual.
The code indicates that the torque converter is slipping or not locking up due to a hydraulic or mechanical problem. I'm not much into trannys so I can't give you any more information, try posting your question at the tranny forum.
Cheap fix my A$$!!! Lee Myles and AAMCO both said the TQ converter is toast and there are other problems causing harsh shifts. Their suggestion: total rebuild. $1500!!!!! YIKES!! Thanks for the help.
