The OD light started flashing and I'm showing a P1744 code (Torque Converter Clutch stuck in off position, excessive slippage). The truck still seems to be shifting fine. Even when OD light is flashing, I can still turn OD on/off and feel the torque converter lock and unlock. I checked the pan temperature over the weekend with an infrared thermometer and it was 150 degrees. I was told by a friend that actual transmission temperature is 10-20 degrees higher than pan temperature. Any truth to this? Local transmission shop told me I needed a rebuild. In my semi-informed opinion, if transmission temperatures are reasonable and the truck is shifting ok, the transmission still has some life left in it. Thoughts?

Then you do have a problem. It could be a worn out converter clutch, a damaged seal on the input shaft, a sticky valve in the pump body, or a bad torque converter clutch solenoid.
