Hi guys, just wondering if someone could answer a couple ?'s for me. I recently bought a 85 f150 with a 300 inline 6 in it. I've been the told the 300's a great motor, but mine just needs a little work. First off, I've only been getting about 9 mpg. I don't expect it to do great on gas, but shouldn't I be a little higher than this? It will start great when it's cold, but after it warms up it doesn't want to start again. It will flood itself out and I'll have to hold it to the floor and keep crankin it untill it finally goes. Also, it always seems sluggish. I have to keep it floored to get anywhere. It's top speed is about 55 mph, maybe 60 downhill. It seems to me like the carburator needs a little adjusting. Could anyone tell me an easy way to tune this thing? Or would I be better off taking it to the shop? Thanks guys
I've put on new plugs, wires, dist. cap, coil, air filter, fuel filter, still no luck. Planning on checking timing next, and not sure what to look for to check vacuum hoses. Any pointers? Sorry guys, I'm not any good at this type of stuff, but I enjoy learning. Thanks
It's a new carb, just put it on about a month ago, I'm just not quite sure I have adjusted right. I set the high idle speed, but that's the only thing I adjusted when I put it on. Anyone have any pointers on how to set this thing? I will check for clogged hoses too, thanks guys.
I'm no expert, but it sounds like your choke could be staying on all the time-- try taking off the air filter and taking a peak once it's warmed up. That would explain the easy cold starts, hard hot starts, poor MPG, and flooding.
