I just added a Truecool cooler in line with the stock one and that did the trick. It was only 120$ and simple to add on. Temp never get over 140 driving empty.Lots of other people have done it this way with similar results.
Just did what CPS mentioned above too, added a Derale 7000 trans cooler inline with my stock one, under a hundred bucks. Clay at RiffRaff should be selling them soon.

On my Excursion, I installed 6.0L cooler from the bottom. I don't think the F series has the blocker beam which makes it even easier. After removing the blocker beam below the main bumper I just removed the rubber guards held in with the plastic rivets and disconnected the hoses un did the 4 screws holding the old cooler in, removed the lower AC condenser mounts and carefully shoved the new one in. I did have to jack the front of the truck up to have enough room. I bought extra hose and 1/2" to 3/8" hose barb adapters from mcmaster.com. MAKE SURE YOU REPLACE the stock hose clamps on the new cooler.

I put together a "How To" for installing a 6.0 cooler based on the way I did mine. Everyone on all the forums seems to ask the same question so I put this together.
I ended up call Ford this morning. $475 for the 26 row and $560 for the 31 row Just got done ordering a 26 row from Ed for $375 shipped second day. Just regular ground it would have been $340ish, so not bad at all.

When I was Lead Hill getting a new BTS transmission, Brian was going to put a 6.0 on my truck. I said to just put in 'inline' with the 7.3 cooler that was on there. He told me that leaving the 7.3 cooler on the truck would Restrict the flow of fluid through the lines because of the size of the lines. Thus defeating the purpose of the new cooler to move more fluid.
Finally got around to getting my 6.0L cooler in today. It was slightly more of a pain than I had anticipated, but not bad by any stretch. Those write-ups came in very handy. Thanks again guys. I look forward to seeing to cool transmission temperature reading when I get my gauges installed.
Mine got up to 150 F towing about 5k. It was not real hot outside maybe 70's. According to Mark Kovalski there is such a thing a too cold. I think he recommended around 170F. Too cold and it does not get all the water condensation out. Mine has been running 130-140 F running empty which is a little on the cold side.
