Yeah way too much CFM that'd be too much for a Stock 350-355Cid GM or a 351W Ford.....as to brand provided it aint a Double Pumper, brand of carburetor comes down to personal Preference. I'd suggest A holley 4160 at 600CFM with Vacuum Secondaries AND the optional 50cc Accelerator pump upgrade.
if i was gonna go with a holley... i would go with their truck avenger carbs as they work better on 4x4 vehicles. they're designed for off-roading
The truck avenger carbs cannot keep a good adjustment. Knock the truck around at all off road, and the carb will need to be readjusted. The edlebrock avs truck carbs are much more stable, and will take knocking around much better.
To the original poster, its time to redo pretty much everything you already did. Heres a list of GOOD parts to swap over to carb:
-Edlebrock performer intake. (The RPM is not designed to work with a low idle, it needs to be bumped up to work with that intake)
-A 600-650cfm carb I would again recommend edlebrock, even if its just their performer carb, and not the off road version. They are very reliable carbs, needing very little tuning
-Duraspark II Dizzy w/ vac advance. Stock ford is fine
-duraspark II ignition box
-MSD Blaster II coil
This setup will get that 302 running great carbed. To find duraspark II componants, I believe an 83 302 used duraspark, use that as your source vehicle when you go to the parts store.
Or quit playin with the small fish and step it up to a full MSD ignition system, coil dizzy ignition box and wiring. lol
