I'm in the market for one right now. I have to make a LONG trip without my wife as navigator and I don't want to make a wrong turn somewhere.
Been there done that years ago before we met and I ended up having to backtrack about 50 miles.
I'm only considering the portable ones, I don't want a built in one.
So what's your favorite ones?
Garmin, TomTom, Magellin? Or ????
Garmin 255 and the price has gotten quite reasonable. Between reg price and sales prices it ranges from $115 to $199 depending on the retailer.
I got mine on sale at Target for $117 .
I have a driod, it's amazing how well the navigation works. It does burn through batteries when it's navigating, though.
A couple of weeks ago, I was digging out dirt that had fallen down in the end of one of the truck scales, and lost a bolt for the scale in the dirt. So I downloaded a free metal detector application to my driod, and found the bolt in the dirt.
That's what I was gonna say, kinda. My buddy has some type of smart phone and it blows doors on my Garmin hand held. His phone uses google earth for it's maps and is very user friendly. I still haven't figured out some of the options on my Garmin. Not to mention, my Garmin is just what it is. He can make a phone call on his unit. All together now... WOW!!

I think it would be an android of some type, it's the OS developed by google.

It's like Star Trek or the Matrix.
Jeez, now that is pretty cool. It's amazing what's coming out on these new phones. See if you can find a Powerstroke 500hp app. PHAT.
I have both Magellan and Garmin, they both have strengths and weaknesses. Garmin is a little higher scale unit and seems to find things faster. Had the magellan longer so had to relearn the controls for the garmin, like them both.
I have always used Tomtom, I love how I can plug it into my computer and update the satellite locations, and map corrections.
However, the google maps navigation on my driod phone is awesome.
If I had a way to mount it to the windshield, I would use it more often.
I have tried Garmin, but I liked Tomtom much better.
My wife and I use a portable Garmin with windshield mount. There is now an upgraded version of the one I have at Costco that is now $50.00 off. Lots of features in this one including Blue tooth (Garmin model 1690):
I also have GPS in my smart phone but it does not have the many useful features of the stand alone units. Let me know if you want to try out the Garmin I have and see if you like it.
