I bought one of those cigarette lighter sockets and wired it in (fused) up under my dash and plugged the GPS wiring in there so it's technically still portable. I then snaked the wiring up out of the dash by the A pillar and keep the GPS in the lower left corner of the windshield.
Make sure to get whatever updates are available to you. A handy feature is the POI search where you can find a place to eat near you.
Chris, when you hard wired the installation, did you cut the head off of the accessory cable and wire it in, or did you buy a socket with a pigtail on the end and wire that in, then plug in the accessory cable?
If you cut it, was it simply a two wire cable, pos and neg?

But it got us there..
The 1450 informs me that on the short routes that it involves leaving the pavement.
It then asks me if I want to stay on the pavement.
Hey Dan,
I use mine every day. looking for addresses across and around the country. I chose a Garmin 255t more simply because of price and availability than anything else. that being said its done everything I can ask it to do. If you've got the money you may want to check out the truck/Rv model. I don't recall the # but it calculates trips factoring in height and weight restrictions, length limitations and the POI include truck stops and other RV friendly stuff. Also get the life time updates, its cheaper that paying annually. Good luck on your trip. Save yourself some hassle, print the RHN list before you take off, that way you won't need it. I'm in N CA right now if you're coming this way.

Glad to hear you made it to your new location OK.
That blown hose incident could have been a lot worse.
I'll be traveling through Nevada, 50 miles shorter and higher speed limit.

The easiest way to do it is with a socket. If you cut the accessory cable you may need 5 volts instead of 12 volts.
A follow up is due.
I ended up buying a Garmin Nuvi 1450.
It works very well.
The fun part about it, you can download some software that allows you to record the turn by turn instructions with your voice or whoever you want and then transfer them to the device.
I had the kids all take turns recording the instructions.
One of them is a riot, Devin put on his best Arnold Shwartznegger voice.
