If it is a 360/390 (you aren't saying what engine you have) you'll need to remove the header bolts and move the headers over and drop the starter out the bottom.
Install the new starter thru the frame rail/ inner fender and then re-install the header.
ok i worked on removing the header and got all the bolts but 2. the bolts that are giving me problems is the second one in on the top and it is stripped and the other is the fourth one in on the bottom and the corners were rounded. thinking that im going to end up having to cut the heads of the bolts off and hope that im able to pull the header off and use vice grips to pull the rest of the bolt out. the moter is a 360. let me know what yall think and if yall have any other tips or ideas. who knew that when i started at 9 this morning to change out a starter that it would end up being a pain in the ***.
but i have decided that im going to track down whoever thought that it was a good idea to take the orginal exhaulst off and put the headers on and kick their *** because it makes a easy job hard and time consuming. baught the truck a little over a week ago and did not expect to have to do so much work to it. so far ive had to replace the choke cable, battery, starter solenoid, neg battery wire, solenoid wire, and now the starter, manifold bolts and gasket. i hope nothing else goes wrong for a while.
ok well since im all ready about half way through with changing out the starter ill still put the new one in and then see if it keeps doing the same thing then replace the ignition switch.
good news thanks to irwin bolt grips and pb blaster the header is finally off and the starter is out. later this week the list of things to do is replace the starter, 2 gaskets, 8 manifold bolts, and check the new solenoid and ignition switch if problem continues.
