I have a 2006 F-250 with 65k and have noticed that the left side (when looking at it from in front of the truck) of the air filter and the plastic housing behind it do not meet with a tight seal. It appears that the plastic piece containing the MAF sensor and filter housing do not match up tightly. There is a gap approximately 1/4in near the bottom and I am concerned about dusting the turbo because of gunk being sucked up.
It almost appears that the plastic with the MAF sensor has warped from heat and curled back a little bit preventing a proper seal. It also appears to be a bad design in that there are no clamps holding the seal on that side of the filter. I've read on here that someone has had the same issue and my brothers 2005 6.0 has the same gap and warpage, just not as much.
Should I just duct tape the gap? I know that the filter is seated properly and all 4 clamps are in place and operating as designed. I know aftermarket intakes are discouraged but if this is a common issue then what good is a great air filter but crappy design allowing unfiltered air into the turbo? Please help.
There are tabs on the bottom of the filter housing that should go into slots in the bottom of the filter body. Are those tabs engaged properly? If not, the filter housing cannot properly seat against and seal against the filter.
Yes the tabs are engaged at the bottom but upon closer inspection I found that the MAF tube is up against the engine lift hook preventing proper seating. This is where the engine would be lifted with a cheery picker. The engine is a reman motor that FoMoCo put in about 35,000 miles ago under warranty. Should I cut off the hook point or what?
My 05 did the same. Was not sealing right. I wonder if they had a bad batch of plastic, abs or what ever the housing is made out off? Actually had a little dusting from the OEM. Lucky I caught it early. I use a little grease around seal and duct tape until i bought an S&B.
Thanks guys I will give it a try. After watching the video I guess I was fighting removal of the filter assembly way too much. It seemed time consuming but way easier then trying to fit the filter element down in and realigning everything up in place.
