96 F150 4 wheel drive problems HELP

I have a 96 F150 with auto hubs and manual floor shift for 4 wheel drive. When I shift into 4 wheel drive the light on the dash indicates that it is in 4 wheel drive, however with the rear ties raised off the ground with a floor jack under the rear-end. The shafts coming out of the transfer case turn but the front wheels do not turn. Is there a censor that talks to the auto hubs that tells them to engage? Is there a way to test my auto hubs to see if they are the problem? Or is there any other way to further trouble shoot this problem?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Thanks

I'm confused. Maybe I am not familiar enough with the '96 options. You have auto hubs and the transfer case shifter is on the floor? My '94 F150 was different.

Can you lock the hubs manually?

OK, a little research cleared up my confusion. You have those hubs that have to roll backwards to disengage. Those are self contained. Maybe they are gunked up?

Sounds like your auto hubs are not engaging.

How do the Auto hubs know when to engage? Is it a mechanical action or electronic ?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure it's mechanical. I know there ain't any form of actuator or anything on my '92 with auto hubs AND floor shift 4x4. We got the best of both worlds, but the man hubs are more reliable. When you shift into 4x4, do you put the truck in reverse and let it roll backwards for a few feet? That's what engages and disengages the hubs.

ya, the hubs are mechanical. They lock in when the front axle turns at the same speed as the tire, and they disengage when you reverse in 2wd for 10-20ft. They are notorious for failure, and you can get replacements, but most go straight to manual hubs.

Yeah, new auto hubs are extremely expensive. One of my friends had one go out on his truck and the junkyard wanted like $250 for one. The autos are nice, but when they go out, I'm goin with some good manuals.
