Oil pump question

I'm in the middle of replacing the oil pan gasket on a 1991 F150 5.0. What is the orientation of the pump shaft? The shaft fell out when I let it drop into the pan. Does the collar go down as the picture below shows or up? If it does go down, does the collar slip over the pump spindle more? Also, any recommendations whether a new pump is a must while doing this would be great. I don't think they go out very often but if I'm wrong I DON'T want to repeat this procedure!

I would replace the pump. It's only $25 or so. I don't like repeat procedures either. I'm pretty sure the collar on the shaft faces up towards the dizzy.

I'd just put a new pump in, it will be cheap insurance. I think the Melling pump I put in mine was only like $35. I'll also agree that the collar should go up towards the distributor.

Yes, the collar (facing up) keeps the shaft from being pulled out of the pump when the distributor is pulled out for service. Oil pumps rarely go bad, but while you're there, they are pretty inexpensive. Make sure the pickup screen is clean, that's a more common problem.
