I have a 2000 Expedition 4x4 with the 5.4, and I have had some problems with it shifting sometimes. It mainly happens with the 1-2 shift and rarely happens with the 2-3 shift. The problem is under normal driving around on side streets or parking lots when it goes to shift it seems like its shifting way to hard. When the truck is under more of a load it shifts really smooth and it never happens. Most of the time it happens I'm going under 25 mph. The truck has been doing this since I bought it and I can not figure it out. The trans fluid doesn't smell burnt and it is at the correct level. I changed the fluid as soon as I purchased the truck which was a littler over a year ago. I replaced the trans filter and put in Mobil Synthetic trans fluid. Does anyone know why it would be shifting hard under light throttle.
My 2000 5.4 manual was very clear when it said not to use mercon V, to use straight mercon.
That's not the whole story. Here's the wording from the 2000 owners manual:
Use MERCONV in the 4R70W - 13.1L (13.9 quarts)
Use MERCON in the 4R100 (4x2) - 15.0L (15.9 quarts); and the 4R100 (4x4) - 15.5L (16.4 quarts)
Ensure the correct automatic transmission fluid is used. Transmission fluid requirements are indicated on the dipstick or on the dipstick handle. Check the container to verify the fluid being added is of the correct type. Refer to your Scheduled Maintenance Guide to determine the correct service interval.
Some transmission fluids may be labeled as dual usage, such as MERCON and MERCON V. These dual usage fluids are not to be used in an automatic transmission that requires use of the MERCON type fluid. However, these dual usage fluids may be used in transmissions that require the MERCON V type fluid.
MERCON and MERCON V type fluids are not interchangeable. DO NOT mix MERCON and MERCON V. Use of a transmission fluid that indicates dual usage (MERCON and MERCON V) in an automatic transmission application requiring MERCON may cause transmission damage. Use of any fluid other than the recommended fluid may cause transmission damage.
My dad had this same exact issue in his '00 Excursion v10 w/4r100. If you were taking off easy from a stop the 1-2 shift was very hard and noticeable it really slammed into gear, but if you were heavy on the gas you wouldnt feel it at all. Turns out it had a weak spring on a ball valve that caused it to build to much pressure, had to have the tranny rebuilt. The trans guy said that it was OK to drive as is/was, but would eventually cause some damage.
I just looked at the bottle of Mobil 1 trans fluid and it said it was compatible with both MERCON and MERCON V.
Which tranny do you have? Because the 4R100 Requires Mercon and the use of dual usage fluid Like the Mobile 1 can kill it.
This is from the owner's manual:
MERCON and MERCON V type fluids are not interchangeable. DO NOT mix MERCON and MERCON V. Use of a transmission fluid that indicates dual usage (MERCON and MERCON V) in an automatic transmission application requiring MERCON may cause transmission damage.
