Rain Gutter Seam Sealer Question....

My 78 has decent OEM paint but I noticed the factory seam sealer job at the drip rails was sub par and some water is getting into the door frame and or body. Can I simply remove/scrape off old sealer, clean, rust treat, etc. and then put down some new seam sealer without messing the roof paint up too bad? Has anyone done this? Thanks.

Just a word of warning: I have a friend who bought the oem sealer for the gutters. Despite the label warning, he used it thinking he was outside with great ventilation and a breeze blowing. The faint fumes almost killed him, and put him in bed for three days. Quality respirator are the key words here, with rubber gloves. It is very serious stuff!!
