My '02 Ranger XLT (bought new 9/02) with 12K on it now (long commute). I've recently noticed a low rumbling or thumping noise coming from the front end. I thought at first that it was the frost heaves on the road, but it happens on smooth road too. It only happens (or I only hear/feel it) when going 20-40 mph. I tried adding air to the front tires but no changes. A month ago the brakes were pulsing and I brought it to the dealer. They machined down the front rotors and that problem was fixed. Could they have messed something else up? Any ideas before I bring it back to Ford?
I rotated the tires today and the noise/rumble is gone! I noticed that the lug nuts were relatively easy to remove which has me a bit worried. The last time the wheels were off was at the Ford dealer a month ago to check the brakes. Seems like I've been having the rumble noise since I got it back from them, I wonder if they just never torqued the nuts on correctly. I also noticed that the brakes are tighter since I just rotated the tires, may just be a coincidence. I checked the owners manual and torqued them to 135, I'll check them again in a week.
Lug nuts can do all sorts of wierd things. Years ago I had new tires put on my '66 Mustang. They apparently over-torqued the fronts with an impact wrench. I pulled out of the lot and before I could get to 20MPH the steering wheel was shaking so bad it was hard to hold on to. Turned around, had them loosen and re-torque all the lugs and it was fine. About a week later, I started to feel some vibration from the back. I took a look and on the passenger side, one of the lug nuts was gone and the other 4 were loose. Close call.
