We are finally putting my FE into one of our race cars again. It's a 428 .030 over, so its 4.16 bore. I was wondering where is the best place to buy some rings at a decent price? Sizes I'm finding are 4.155 and 4.165. Its just got stock flat top pistons, 10:1 or so. I don't want to spend 200 bucks on a set, as the bottom end is basically stock. It's been 10+ years since I've bought any FE stuff so I'm trying to refresh my memory some...
Sorry I can't help you find the cheapest price, but I can recommend you use Sealed Power rings if they make them in the right size (they do make them for a 428, but you have to check the ring thickness to make sure they match your pistons ring grooves).
Previously, I always used Hastings, and I always had some oil burning. It may have been from other causes, but I credit the different design of the Sealed Power oil ring as at least helping a lot.
I'd try your local machine shop first. Sometimes internet prices seem cheap, but they get you on shipping charges.
Just another note on Hastings rings. When I destroyed a piston from detonation, the top ring was fine, the 2nd ring was broken, the land between the 2nd ring and oil ring was broken and the Hastings oil sperator ring (wavey part) was in dozens of pieces. I sort of think this somewhat weak sperator was what broke first, and then the broken parts caused the land to break and then the 2nd compression ring.
As easy as it is to say, "Don't' let your engine detonate and Hastings rings will be fine", when one is experimenting with timing, or just makes a mistake, or in my case, a slipped balancer outer ring put my timing marks off and I didn't realize it, detonation can happen.
Yeah, I'm not looking for cheap cheap, I just don't see spending 2-300 for stock piston setup. I am running a new fluiddampner on it so shouln't have the issue you had. I do know this fe likes timing though, I run full msd ignition and set it at 42* full advance and it runs the best. Tried 36 and it dropped 3 tenths in the quarter mile. It's got some professionally ported aluminum heads and a smaller solid roller on the top end.

Yes, I run 38 max in mine, but I know I was running a lot higher when the balancer was slipping and I kept adjusting the timing not realizing what was going on. Not sure how high it got before the detonation started breaking things, but the damper was somewhere over 30 degrees out at the end. Not that I necessarly set it at that point, but in hindsight, the sliping was gradual and I'm sure I was well over 40 degrees advanced at times. Probably got away with it as I didn't push the engine to it's limits very often.
Ya, me either, used to run 63-6400 max, gonna gear it up for my dad who is going to drive it. Probably 6000max. Dad came out of retirement last year(65 yrs old) and is running again. He got out of the seat and let me drive the last 22 years. I have as much fun watching him as running myself. If it had a little more compression I think it would run better with less timing. My motor has 14:1 and its set at 33*
