360-428

I'm new to FE motors and am curious; would it be possible to put a 428 crank into a 360 block after its bored to 4.132 or would that not work at all?

It's doable, but few 360/390 blocks can be bored out that far. The block must be sonic tested for thickness before even considering a .060 overbore.

IIRC you can use a 428 crankshaft in a standard bore 360/390 block and net 410 cid or Survival motorsports stroker kit will net 445 cid.

Welcome to the forum!

As has been said, very few 360/390 blocks can be pushed 080 over. Sonic check anything past 030. FEs are known to suffer from core shift so you really never know how far any particular casting is going to go without a sonic check.

But yes a 428 crank/rods/pistons in a 360/390 bore block=410cid. These were available in Mercury full size cars from 66-67.

Even if said theoretical block can be bored 080 over, I'd go 060 over first that way you still have room left for a rebuild at some point. Once it's @ +080 that's the last go around it'll have. 423 vs 428cid is not much difference. JMO

Then there's always the stroker route

Welcome to the world of FE's. Barry at survival mototrsports is currently building me a 445 stroker short block. Unfortunately scat ran out of the crank shafts so mine and 2 others are sitting on his shop floor ready for assembly, waiting for cranks to be made

Any word on the timeframe? I know he's been waiting a while for them.

I placed my order back in the middle of august and barry quoted me 6 to 8 weeks. I called him a little over two weeks ago and thats when i found out he was waiting on crank shafts. He said that the last thing he heard from scat was "some time in november". He said he was in the process of trying to talk some of his customers with higher end builds into going with a forged crank so that he could use their cast cranks in the builds he has waiting. I will give him another call later this week to see if he has heard any more yet, although he is a very hard guy to get a hold of.

Good to know thanks. Hope he gets them in soon. I know he's been waiting on iron Genesis blocks too. Hard to make a living when there's major backorders on your life lines.

From what I've heard the Eagle cranks aren't machined as well as the Scats but they do balance well. It should be noted that most stroker cranks come externally balanced. The kits from Barry are already internally balanced via some mallory slugs in the counterweights so you can still run your neutral balanced 360/390 flywheel/flexplate. Something to think about.

While it's inconvenient to run out of parts, I'm glad there is so much demand for the FE. Maybe it'll drive the price down on some of these parts. As most of us know anything for the FE is near the top of the most expensive list. A look in any catalog will show that.

Apparently demand is outstripping supply, not good for us FE consumers

I've been surprised at the resurgence in popularity. Just a few years ago there weren't nearly as many part options and everything was more expensive. It looked like the FE was on it's way out and the only ones left were the little niche of super stock racers and restorers. Now there's more to choose from and it's less expensive(if only marginally).
