Driveshaft Questions

Does anyone know the length and u-joint size of the rear driveshaft for a 1978 reg cab short box with a 400, c6 and 205? I need to find one for my truck and this would certainly help when digging through piles of shafts.

All help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Keeping my fingers crossed on this one. According to the Ford Parts Catalog the driveshaft you're looking for is 46 23/32" long 3" in diameter and takes two 1310 u-joints. The diameter of the caps is 1 1/16" and the width of the yoke, outside to outside is 3 15/16".
According to the chart, the length isn't measured center to center of the u-joint holes but from the inside edge of the u-joint holes (hook the tape measure in one u-joint hole and measure to the inside edge of the other hole.
The original p/n is D8TZ-4602-D
Fits 1978 F-150 w/ 116" wheelbase, part time 4WD, 400 cu in V8 and C6 trans.

Thanks, do you know if the length is measured with the driveshaft fully collapsed or is it the length on the truck at rest?

Also, would a truck with a 4" lift need a longer shaft?

According to the parts catalog this is a single piece driveshaft with a u-joint on each end, NOT splined on one end.
Do you have a spline (slip joint) on one end?

My mistake! That drive shaft IS a slip yoke on one end!!
The length is measured without the slip yoke. Measurement is from the inside edge of the u-joint hole to the end of the splined end.

I switched the transfer case in the truck from the 203 to the 205, and the 203 driveshaft was too short. So I never really had one that worked, just trying to find the right one.

Oh, okay. The parts catalog shows the full time shaft length as 40 31/32" so it is deffinitely shorter.
Here are two illustrations from the Ford Master Parts Catalog. On the first illustration, scroll down to the bottom and you will see how the length is measured.
On the second, Go to the drive shaft code column and go down to code 98 (about half way down). This will give you all the dimensions of the slip yoke, good luck.
