My CEL has not worked since I bought my '97 F150 4.6L. I suspected when I test drove it that the previous owner disabled it. I regularly scanned it to confirm that the P0401 code was the only one present, but now that I have cleaned the throttle body, there are no codes.
Can the CEL be disabled any other way than removing or disconnecting the bulb ? DO I have to take the dash apart to get to the bulb, or is there an easier way ?
as sad as it is,this is often a common practice that is done buy a shaddy dealer or idividual.more than likely they pulled the bulb.they could of also removed the wire from the pcm the goes to the inst.cluster that turns the light on.its people like this that give us independent dealers that work hard to maintain a good rep a bad name.
Here you will find instructions on how to remove the cluster.
This was put together by "Sloberdog" here on the site in relation to the odometer blackout problem common to some of our trucks. http://www.scribd.com/doc/377317/Expedition
* a note of caution *
If you pull the cluster, be careful when you remove the gear indicator. If you pull too hard on it(I have to assume that's what I did), then it will break at the adjustment collar. Duct tape is an easy fiworked for me), by why break it if you don't need to.
