Several years ago I took my car Econoline 250 2001 for inspection and of course it failed ( check engine light was on). The guy said he "took care of it" but what he really did I guess was disable the CEL. Does anyone know how to get this working or whst could have been done to the CEL? Was it just taken out? Does it have a seperate fuse? From what i heard its very difficult to remove. Any one have a clue? Thanks Steve
sounds like the mechanic you saw was pretty shady. the CEL should light up anytime the key is on and the engine is off, and it should stay lit if it has any trouble codes stored in its memory. your first step at this point should be to plug in a diagnostic computer and find out what codes it has stored, if any. these computers can be had for as little as about $60, or borrowed from many local parts stores for free

Hey Thanks! I aleady did that. I had a PO171 and a PO 340 . i fixed the vac leak and cam sensor now all codes are gone. The problem as I have stated was getting the CEL to go back on. What did they do remove the bulb or fuse? If so how can I get to the CEL to see if its missing or what..Ihave the ford MANUAL BUT ITS NO HELP.!! help!!!
well, i've never tried to pull the cluster in the newer econolines, i know the ones from the 80s are simple as can be to remove. of course, once the cluster is out, all the bulbs are easy to see and replace from the back side.
it sounds like the guy removed the bulb, as i suspect that removing the fuse would cause a lot more trouble to happen
hey Thanks dude.. btw is it a big problem to get at the horn switch? Do I have to pull the front of the steering wheel off? I have no clue... Just trying to get this thing past inspection!!
you'll just have to pop off the steering wheel cover, as the horn button is part of it. i believe there are a few screws on the backside of the wheel you'll have to pull out to do this.
Consider airbag precautions if there's an airbag in the steering wheel. Generally you disconnect the battery ground cable and wait a couple of minutes. Makes it difficult to check the horn, though.
