when i bought my truck the heater core was already bypassed. the PO says it was bad and it shows signs by the rusty water stain on the floor...i'm planning on changing it soon today since it was windy and below 70 the initial shock of cool whether got me thinkning about a defroster...
So i'm going to replace the heater core soon...which is something i have never done...is it like some cars i have done where the whole dash has to come out or is it just 4 studs sticking through the firewall like i read on here somewhere else?
You have to remove the heater box from the dash. It's been a while since I've done one but you don't need to remove the steel dash just the side bolts, it will pull our far enough to get the box out.
Wait- without AC the heater box can be pulled out from the engine compartment? Can you be more specific about where these bolts under the dash or show any pictures? I am about to try and replace my core this weekend. -Michael

It's actually the other way around. The bolts are under the hood and the box comes out from the interior. As for location, I don't have a pic but it should be pretty obvious if you just look at the passenger side fire wall from under the hood.
If I remember correctly there are 4 studs that stick through the fire wall, the nuts are removed from under the hood. Unhook the blower motor wiring and heater hoses from the core. I've even pulled the far right side dash mounting bolt for more room, it should come right out. I've done a few and its really easy.
