2000 Expo, 5.4, 4R100 trans. The side of the trans has a 2004 plate so I assume it was a factory rebuild about then. I flushed the trans last week by running the engine until it spit out of the return line at the rear of the trans and changed the filter, but I don't think I flushed it complete even though it was spitting when I shut it off. After adding a few quarts, I flushed it a little more. It ran great for a week, but today it seemed like it was starting off in second gear, only a couple of times. The wife said it felt gutless to her as well.
I replaced the fluid with Castrol Mercon V and I read that you cannot combine Merc and Merc V.
My question is, if it was a rebuild in '04, do you think they put in Mercon or Merc V? And if it was only Mercon and I didn't get a complete flush, would a quart or 2 of remaining Mercon make a difference? After filling the trans to level, was there anything else I should have done? Does the torque converter fill from the pump?
Got any codes? You used to not be able to mix Mercon and Mercon V when it first came out. I think the general concensus was if you have a 4R100, to use regular Mercon. The 4R70 is the one that gets the switch over to Mercon V. I think this is just for the Motorcraft brand stuff, since most aftermarket tranny fluid is kind of universal. It sounds like the tranny is in limp mode. Having that little of Mercon isn't going to make a difference in something that uses a little over 16 quarts total. The torque converter does get it's fluid from the pump as it runs.
It's no biggie, I think they just did that since Ford quit making regular Mercon. What's the tranny do when you put it in 1st? Might check the MLPS on the side of the tranny and make sure it's lined up.
I went through all the gears with the shifter and it worked fine. MLPS wasn't touched except to unplug the connector to make room for the pan to drop. It is solid where it sits and I took care not to disturb the position, so I don't think that's the problem, but I'll give it a second look. It's 100 deg out today so that will have to wait till tomorrow.
I may give it another flush to raise the Merc V percentage, but I sure don't want to spend another $80 on fluid.
Well, I did a full flush today and put 14-15 qts of Mercon back in, so I'll see how it goes. When I had the original post, we had a week of 110 degree weather and I think the fan clutch was activated causing the engine to feel under powered and louder then usual because we haven't had the issue since the heat. I know that I can use Mercon V in this trans per a few readings, but I put the regular Mercon back in.
