I know this subject has been talked about a lot, but many of the threads were quite old. Mercon V has replaced Mercon right?? I have a 2002 with a 4R100 transmission, the owners manual say to use Mercon not Mercon V. I believe Ford had a TSB stating to use Mercon V in place of Mercon. My question is can I drop the pan, change the transmission filter and add the approximately 6 quarts to fill it up without a complete flush?

You are correct on both counts, Mercon V has replaced Mercon as the service fluid for these transmissions.

ISSUE
MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid.
ACTION
Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON(R) can now be serviced using MERCON(R) V or MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON(R) / MERCON(R) V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will only continue for however long it takes to deplete what remains in inventory.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Service automatic transmissions requiring MERCON(R) with MERCON(R) V or MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON(R) / MERCON(R) V
And secondly, why would you want to only change 6 quarts of a system that takes nearly 20? Take a look at THIS PROCEDURE; it takes only a few minutes and will replace all the fluid in your transmission!
I changed it all out today, per the link provided. It went real well, no problems. Except it is hard to work with that much transmission fluid without making a mess. Thanks for the advice.
