the vehicle is a 02 expedition. here is the situation. its my parents vehicle they wrecked it and bought it back. paid to have everything fixed. they drove it for a year or so, then the rear suspension quit working. they paid someone to fix it a few times, only for it to fail time after time. they dont know if it has air bags in the front or not.
the air compressor is currently unhooked, and the car has a dead battery but the front is sitting perfect. so to me this means it does not have air suspension in the front. am i right?
ive looked at strutmasters kit. and it appears to me that all they come will is coil springs and replacement shocks. couldnt i just order stock coil springs off ebay, and put them in?
also if i order a small lift kit will this solve the problem?
please answer all three questions, and give any other input you may have.
Is the truck 2 WD or 4 WD? The 4 WDs with air have torsion bar front with air shocks and air springs in the rear. The 2 WDs have coils in the front. Lets find out what you have and then try to fix the problem. You might be able to repair the suspension by doing some basic investigating of the system. If the bags are not rotted out it could be a cheap fix. Don't give up! Never give up!
its 4wd
im not even going to consider fixing the air suspension. my dad has sank thousands of dollars into fixxing it several times.
im ready for "old fashioned" suspension. i know it wont fail.
so does anyone know if i can substitute a stock coil spring and stock shock for the strutmasters kit?
as far as i know the strutmaster kits is just a coil spring and shock, from their website i see nothing else, no brackets, or anything.
hopefully someone has bought the kit before and they can let me know...?
If you can wait a couple of days I am in the process of taking the Strutmasters lit out of my 2002 4x4 E.B and switching it back to the Air-ride. The kit has less than 1000 miles, frt coil overs and rear coil springs.I will be more than willing to sell it.Just send me a e-mail rocketvette95@hotmail.com

I installed the Strutmasters rear coil conversion kit for my old 00 EB. I didn't buy shocks.
Whether you can use stock coils or not, that I'm not sure of. If you could, one would tend to think there might not be much market for companies like Strutmasters, Arnott Industries etc. But what do I know...?
i sent you an email, get back with me soon or i will have to buy a kit off the internet. i would like the parts to be to my door by next weekend.
i still havent figured out the point of the strutmasters kit. it seems that all it is is coil springs. and you could just buy stock coil springs and place them in place of the airbags...

Yes you can! Buy a pair of coils from a non-air suspension Expedition from your local wrecking yard for about 70.00. Take out the old air suspension air bags, and while you're at it put in a new pair of shocks. For the fronts you can replace the front air shock with coil over shocks for an older model Bronco (rears).
ok here is my update. ive been looking at all the links you guys have posted, and i did a few searches. ive came to this conclusion, buy rear shocks from a 1966 bronco. for the front of the expedition.
for the rear i just buy stock shocks from a non air expedition, and stock coil springs.
the stock coil springs are giving me some trouble. i cant find them anywhere... ive found some by moog but they all say RWD, and after research people say they will make the expedition sit lower like a 2wd, which i dont want....any tips?
ive already picked out the shocks off of oreillys website, now i just need these darn coil springs and im set. please help.
i really dont want to buy a conversion kit since they are so expensive
and i was offered a used conversion kit on here for a good price, but i still think if i buy the formentioned parts it will be cheaper, and the parts will be new instead of used.
There is nothing wrong with using used springs. There are thousands of cars over 50 years old with the original springs still functioning just as if they were new. Some people just can't stand getting a deal and saving money.
It's your money, buy what you want.
Its not that im afraid of getting a good deal, trust me im a bargain hunter.
and i do realize shocks can and usually do last forever.
but it seems kinda foolish to buy something used, when with a little search the same thing but newer can be bought for cheaper.
im not trying to be mean to anyone on here, or say im too good for a deal. it just makes more since to me to spend the same amount of money or less, and get a new product instead of used.
im greatful for all the tips ive learned on here and greatful for any and all deals that have been offered to me.
I know some Corvette guys that would kill to get some used 50 year old original springs. Seriously Expeditions rarely get loaded like pick-ups so it's a no-brainer IMO to buy used. Do as you please, you asked for the advice.
i found a "conversion kit" on ebay, it only contains the rear coil springs, and it was 150 shipped, for both of them. thought it was a decent deal since all the other springs are for 2wd and range from $100-$250
i got all four shocks (front and rear) for under a hundred from oreilly's
the front are from a 66 bronco (found this info after searching on here, and your guys posts to this thread)
and the rear are stock shocks.
so total spent was somewhere between 200-250
thanks for all the tips, i looked around for used coil springs at pick npull, and there werent even any expeditions close to me.
