What I find odd is that I can spin it freely through the access whole. Almost feels like its riding on bearings. I would have expected it to have jagged edges and a very rough rotation. The starter engaged due to a faulty relay with the motor already running at about 2000rpm. I replaced the relay and got a few engine start ups before the failure of the flex plate. I'm not sure if the starter could have caused the damage to the plate, or if it was already cracked in there(if thats what it is). So what do you guys think I will find when I get a look see..
The only two flexplate failures I had were the center coming out of them. The only reason it turns like it is on bearings is because it is attached to the torque converter which is on bearings in the trans. I had one do the same as yours, as it just flat took off all the rough edges when it let go. The other one made a nasty noise when it let go and I shut everything down instantly, rough edges intact.
Yea that make's sense. The shame of all of this is that the faulty relay was brand new, along with a new starter, both from auto zone. I wish that I could sue them over this...its NAPA for now on for my parts needs.
NAPA relays are still made in China, right now Motorcraft is the only US made relay. Get one of the late PMGR starters, Matt at SPI (Archion) 1-800-234-5665 knows which one, I have one on my 460. The relay becomes just a relay and doesn't handle the full starter current, and it wil crank a hot 460 with no problem.
For a PMGR just ask your parts store of choice for a starter for a 97 F350 with a 7.5. Some aftermarket brands list a different starter man/auto, Ford does not. I run one from a 97 with an E4OD on my T19 equipped 86.
