my 2004 5.4L, 3 valve triton has started idleing realy rough, but it is running great going down the road. it hasnt poped any codes for a missfireing cylinders. I was wodering if anyone knows how to diagnose the rough idle. or have any idea how or where to hook up a vacume guage, and how to make sense of what its telling me. any advice is great thank you very much.
maybe check your vct solinoid. i think each valve cover has one mounted to it but maybe just the driver side. i have talked to people with the same problem and the CLEANED thiers and was good to go
i JUST CHANGED OUT THE PLUGS IN IT ABOUT 15 THOUSAND AGO. i PUT THE CHAMPION PLUGS IN IT. HOW COULD I TEST TO SEE IF I NEED TO REPLACE THE PCV VALVE? ANY OTHER IDEAS OF WHAT IT COULD BE? IT SEEMS LIKE IT HAS AN INTERMITTEN MISS TO IT. IT DOESNT DO IT CONSECUTIVLY JUST EVERY THIRD REVOLUTION OR SO IT HAS A PAUSE.
You have a 5.4 and there fore do not have the PCV Valve like the other engines or the older 5.4's did so that is not the case for you. Most likely you have COP Boots going bad and should look into replacing them.
is that all i should replace is the boot or should i replace the whole ignition coil? I would rather not because they are like 20 a piece? how could i test to see if i have a messed up valve guide?
They are coil on plugs so you would have to replace the entire unit which I think runs about $100 a piece. But if you aren't getting any codes then that may not be the issue.
I replaced the fuel filter about 15 to 20 thousand miles ago. I will replace it again, they are cheap! I noticed it idling a little rough after I replaced the spark plugs about 8 thousand miles ago. when I put the plugs in the guy I had with me wanted to put antiseize on it, so we used regular antiseize not the electrical conductive stuff ford recomends. do you think that could have anything to do with it? I also just recently had to pull the intake manifold off to replace the IMRC, I put new intake gaskets on it and tourqed it to specs, so i am positive i don't have a vacume leak. the main reason being because it was doing it before i did the intake manifold. any other i deas on tests I could use to pinpoint it? I am up for any ideas! thanks for all the help keep the ideas comin plz! oh and when i pulled the manifold i took carb cleaner to it and cleaned the throttle body and the MAF sensor so i know those are good. how could i test for a bad valve guide or valve?
I was about to say....I replaced my fuel filter and it dod not help the rough idle.
I have been told it could be a vac leak somewhere as well. I am searching for mine currently. It runs smooth on the road but at idle its a little rough.
you seem handy with a wrench why not remove the vct (variable cam timing sensor) and clean it. my be an easy fix or worst case you will know its not that but know its clean.

Does the 4.6 have that and is there a tech folder on where it is at?
I am really good with pictures and I am trying to figure out where the heck it is at.
yea I think that would be another good place to look! I have searched for a vacume leak and there is nothing i can find. I believe i will pull the vct and clean it. what is the best thing to clean it with? maf sensor cleaning spray or carb cleaner. Are there any other sensors or valves other than the vct sensor or maf sensor or pcv valve that could cause the ruck to idle rough? thanks for all the advice, keep ideas a comin!
i would lean to a parts washer at a local shop if you dont have one yourself. carb cleaner can damage rubber and i dont know what seals the vct solinoid has in it / on it
I hear ya on the rubber. I just did a vacume smoke test and it passed with flying colors no smoke anywhere. I also listened to the injectors and they are all clicking strong like they are supposed to, now i think i will move onto the vct sensor then to the cop boots and plugs. has anybody else had problems with their chapion spark plugs. I don't know if i am happy with them. i know in snowmobils they foul out all the damn time and arent very reliable. should i convert back to the two piece motorcraft and change them out every 50 or 60 thousand miles? any opinions. thanks for all the advice!
