Engine swap

I have a 5.4 (8th digit 5) 2005 FX4, CC, SB, 4x4. Has 140,000 miles so I'm thinking of swapping the motor for a fresh 0 miles one or a rebuild. Do I have to stick to 2005 only and/or is there a number of years that would work? Id rather not swap the harness if possible but if it is necessary, so be it. Ideas? Thanks

I know you said the engine has a lot of miles on it, but what is wrong with it? I know that wasn't your question but I was just curious.

Nothing at all. I have done everything "preventative" and it is fine without issue. I just worry about the higher milage and that I put an average of 25,000 per year on it. I My thoughts were that if I had a new engine, it would assure another 5 years without a major breakdown. I'm listening! Thanks

all of the 2004-2008 motors utilize the same long block.

the problem is in 2005-2006 Ford swapped over the 4x4 vacuum lines, and later in 2007 Ford went with a different fuel & wiring system on the top end, and the also used a different belt system

so as long as you grab a complete longblock, and then re-use your current upper intake/manifold/throttle body, you will be good to go.

be aware that in 2008, Ford changed the head design. theoretically it is 100% compatible...but not sure.

the 2004-2010 block is identical though. have fun. I personally would set the money aside and wait for that motor to blow. You might get another 10,000 miles, or another 100,000 miles. The 5.4 3v motor is a pretty solid motor

I have 185,000 on my 04, and except for plugs, the engine has been great. Uses a little oil, but you can put a lot of oil in it for the price of a new bullet. I am thinking about the new V-6 turbo, more power than my V-8, but better gas mileage. It will need to be out for a while before I will buy the thing. I have learned my lesson on new technology.

i would also keep the same motor in the truck until something major fails. also if you get a long block and swap everthing over you may put the part that is going to be the next problem on you new motor and still have a failure. they are good motors for the better part and i would not worry about it till closer to 200k - 250k

That's what I was thinkin. I understand you are thinking "new motor, no problems". But you already have no problems, so why fix what aint broke??
