found a nut in the valley while chasing an oil leak... help!

first time poster, long time looker. just wanted to say that i have read these forums since i bought my truck and i value the advice given here. you guys rock. its amazing to see so many people throwing advice to strangers...

i have an oil leak that has got me worried. i believe that it may be the HPOP. the valley is nice and wet and its leaking down to the tc cover/ oil pan. tonight i was investigating and while sticking a shop rag down under the fuel filter/hpop i found a mystery nut. i was using a magnet pen to reach down and get the rag moved around and low and behold my magnet found something...
the nut is a 1/2inch socket size and has what looks like a yellow torque seal line on it. i am going to read up on the oil leak and i am sure there is a ton of material on the forum. was just wondering if anyone has any idea where this nut may go...
thanks for the help and i hope to get to the point where i might give out some advice and pass on the knowledge

You are asking for a nut in a haystack. There are about 1 million nuts on your truck and to pinpoint ONE is nearly impossible. A previous owner could have been doing something and dropped it and replaced it or maybe not.

You will prob never know unless you personally investigate the surrounding area above!

Post up a pic. It may be one of many possible nuts that got lost in the valley of no return.

I thought you were talking about me! A nut in the valley wrestling with the uppers bolts. That's what I feel like sometimes anyway

I agree. A PO or mechanic could have dropped one. For mechanics it's cheaper to get a new one then speed a bunch of time trying to find it.

I'll be under the hood of mine today making sure the starting system is ready for winter. I'll look around while I'm at it to see if I can find something like the one you describe.

Unhappy another nut

yeah i know this is chasing a nut in a haystack. i thought i found where the nut goes and it fits but then i found another nut in the same spot. they are the same size and i have no idea where this one goes. the worst thing is that i have to move (military) in about a week and i have all the garage packed up. i am probably gonna have to take this to the shop. the wife works at a car dealer and there diesel mech is a good guy and i can get employee rates. so unfortunately i am gonna break down and take it in.
thanks for the help and i am sure i will have more questions.

My neighbor was doing some digging and dug up the cable to my house so I just got my internet going again. The only nuts I could find are the two the hold the bracket for the plastic cover. One on the ground cable for the AIH and one on the p-clamp on the right side fuel line from bowl to the head.
