70 MPH surge?

Hi guys, I have an '04 F350 6.0 with zero mods. Here's what's happens and it doesn't happen all the time but it's annoying. When I first get onto the highway and work my way up to 65-70 MPH my truck surges and there is an accompanying 'PSST' sound with the surge. Now after about 30 seconds of surging it'll go away and run normally for a few days (this truck isn't driven every day, but makes once or twice a week hunting trips or shooting range trips of 50-100 miles). If I get on it harder than normal it doesn't surge at all but I have to get on it pretty good. The surging goes away either with more gas, and/or higher speed. I have bought the EGR delete kit but haven't put it in yet. I just put in new fuel filters and oil too but it did it before and after the fuel/oil.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Check for a crack / air / exhaust leak somewhere.

EGR Cooler Up Pipe is the first suspect.

That does make sense, I suspect it's that as it's the OEM sensor and hasn't been cleaned. I think I'll just jump in and do the EGR delete and that should solve it if it's the EGR.

Thanks for the info!

Gearloose, thanks for the info I'll check it all out very carefully when I tear it apart to install the EGR Delete kit and see if it's any thing you mentioned. Thanks for the ideas on what to look for!

Given all the input so far, I would almost bet that it's a problem with your EGR. I have a tuner on my truck and I never got around to having it retuned after my EGR delete, and it did this same thing whenever I would really lay into it. I finally got time to go get my truck retuned about 3 months ago and it hasn't done it again since then. I can only recommend having your EGR deleted. The only good place for an EGR system is the trash.

when i say i did mine, i meant the ford dealer did it, i can do the easy stuff but i would not attempt that myself, and i agree that the best place for the cooler is in the trash..

Mine did that while towing a couple of times. I pulled over and disconnected the egr valve and it stopped immediately.

That's a good idea for a quick test, I assume it'll throw a code but at least I would know the problem for sure!
