My truck is a 95 F150 4x4 300 I6. The upper and lower ball joints have been replaced on both sides, new outer U joints both sides, new bearings, all new steering bars/tie rod ends, and the passenger side has a new radius arm bushing. All completed in the past year. The driver side radius arm bushing looks like it's been replaced before with a red colored urethane bushing so I didn't bother replacing that one.
Everytime I take off from a dead stop, and let the clutch out normally, a loud pop noise comes from the driver side front end. I can't tell if it's the radius arm area or up further. I can get it to not pop by riding the clutch out a little longer.
I'm thinking it's either the radius arm bushing on the driver side or the driver side motor mount. What do you guys think and what tests can I do to make sure?
If it's the motor mount I'd think you would be able to get it to pop by revving it in neutral. the engine should torque enough on a free rev to pop the mount if it is indeed the mount. I would go after that radius arm bushing either way just b/c it doesn't take 15 minutes to change and the bushings aren't expensive either. Also Urethane bushings are known to allow a bit of noise unlike the rubber bushings. That is their only downfall that I've heard off even though I don't notice many pops or anything on my front end.
To check the motor mounts , Put it gear with your foot on the brake & let the clutch out some & see if the motor lifts up , you can check the other side to buy doing it in reverse.....Lew
Good idea Lew. Didn't think of that. We have done it that way in some auto tranny trucks before, but completely slipped my mind til I read that post. haha
Thanks. The radius arm bushings came in pairs so I still have one laying around. I'll replace that and get my buddy over to help check the motor mount. I'll report back after I get some time.
My 2 wheel drive did the same thing, with an intermittent cracking sound that turned out (after two years of looking) to be the transmission crossmember. Tightening didn't help - I took the bolts on the ends out, pried up on the crossmember with a pry bar, and slipped a copper washer between the crossmember and frame on each side and retightened the bolts.
my 96 with the ZF had this issue and if you have play in the tierod that connects to your pitman arm that will bang back and forth. Had this happen on my truck and ended up replacing inner and outter tierods to come back to the same issue... just a thought
