UH OH!

Well, I finally feel good enough to work on my truck. I got delayed due to an appendectomy...bummer. I moved the truck to my driveway from my neighbors driveway. I put the truck in neutral, transfer in neutral and started the truck for power steering and brakes. I started pulling and the rear-end is now locked up! WTF! I did not have the e-brake set. It was fine when I parked it. Any ideas as to what may have caused this? Now I need to figure out how to tear down the rear end. Full floating axles is a plus. IDK! Damn..... Anyone care to come and help me????!!!!

you sure the parking brake isnt on now? lol.... happens sometimes. but, ive had the issue where my parking brake cable gets locked into position. i had to just take a set of bolt cutters and cut it right at the drum. easiest way to check is to unbolt the 8 bolts on the full floating hub. pull out your axle. if the wheel still wont turn then its more then likely the brakes locking up or bad bearing. if it spins free then its your differential

if i lived your way id help man. tear down is easy. remove those 8 bolts, pull the axle. then you need a keyed axle socket to remove nut that holds the bearings. once you get the nut off you can slide the whole drum and hub off (drum can come off by itself too) then your down to nothing but your brake and backing plate. you need the one on the right. the one on the left is for your front axle hub nut.

Block the tires, and tap the backing plate with a fiber hammer while jiggling the e-brake cables.

Well, I am in the middle of tearing out the tranny. Got the drive shafts off gear shifters off and the access plate off. Getting ready to drop the starter, the slave cylinder is already off. Got the guard for the transfer off. Not looking forward to the cross-member or the one freakin PITA bell housing bolt hidden behind the damned exhaust... I tell ya, my stomach is pretty sore....lol oh well. I am sure having fun cussing this truck...LMAO! I know you guys can sympathize.

hmmmm are you sure the rear end is locked up???? did you jack it up and try to spin the tires by hand with the trans in neutral??? i only say this because i thought the same thing i was going 65 MPH down a busy 4 lane highway and my drivers side wheel locked up and i about ate the side of i semi.... but anyway we thought it was the transfer case and then the rear end but then i though if it was either of those both wheels should have locked so after going through all that checking and searching i came to discover my inner wheel bearing had grenaded inside there and was causing random sporadic lock ups.... if that is the case and the race is stuck to the spindle or whatever you want to call it heat it with a torch first before beating the hell out of it i about f%&ked mine up by not heating it up.....

Both of mine are locked up. Not just one side. I am going to check the whole e-brake setup. I didn't realize that the e-brake locked up both wheels. My 94 1/2 ton I had only had the e-brake on the drivers side. This truck has a cable to each wheel. LOL Hopefully that is it. Got the cross member loose and the starter off. Now the fun part! Bell Housing bolts....YUCK on the one hidden behind that damned exhaust..LOL

An e-brake on one wheel is worthless unless you have a solid axle between the two wheels!

well I got 5 of them out! LOL Ok, I give, what is the trick to getting that last one out behind the turbo side? Do I have to remove my exhaust? My bolts and studs are so rusty. I would be afraid of snapping them. Or worse yet even getting them loose w/o using air tools....is that even possible. LOL HELP!

John......(cussing)....LOL

Ok, got it, but I had to remove my downtube. The bolt was too long to come out once I got it loose. WHEW! That wasn't too bad. Not cussing so bad now...LOL Now just need to figure out the jack configuration to separate the transfer/tranny from the engine. Wish me luck, I don't need my belly squashed! LOL

Since I have it torn down this far. I am curious as to how much more I would need to do in order to change the rear main seal. It is leaking. I figure I might as well do it now. I will have to separate the tranny when I do decide to change it. What do I need to do?

Guys, I really do appreciate the posts. You have really helped me out TREMENDOUSLY! Thank you to all that have helped.

John-one tired *** okie....LOL

A few months, I would say less than 3 but definitely more than 2. From the last time I moved it. This truck has been down for every bit of 8 months if not 9. It has been sitting in an asphalt driveway. It is not in a pasture or a yard. No grass or weeds growing up around it. Well I fiddled with the brake cables. They were tight at first, now they are really loose. I will jack up the rear end once I get that clutch in. I thank you folks very much for helping me.

John.

Ok, got the thing apart! Here are some pics. I hope you guys don't mind. I have a few questions too.

That is the old stuff, is this pretty bad?

Now for the new stuff.

Now um do you think I need to replace my rear main seal? I priced one at ford it si 73 bux, a felpro from oreillys is 24. I have noticed there is a lot of issues with non motorcraft parts, like gps and thermostats. What about the rear main, how hard is it to replace? Any tips or tricks?

What is missing on my transfer case? Is this supposed to be that way? What is it?

Ok, so at this point how hard is the input shaft seal on the tranny? Why would I not want to change it out as well? No worries for anything to separate the tranny and engine again. How should I seal the oil sending unit while I can reach it? Teflon tape? I mean it seems pretty easy to get to.

Any ideas, tips, tricks or suggestions are so welcome right now. If I can afford it I will do my best to do it. I just want to try to take advantage of this situation right now.

Sorry for such a long post guys, I am trying to think of everything. I am sure I am going to have more dizzy questions, I just hope you guys don't mind.

John

Thanks everyone, really thank you. I am so ready to drive her again!
