Fuel line and filter

I recently bought a 1979 F250 400 that has trouble getting fuel to the carb. While I am working on this I am wondering if there are other issues I should deal with. There is about 10" of tubing connected to the outlet of the fuel pump. Then about 10" of rubber hose, the inline fuel filter, another 10" of rubber hose and then the carb. There is no canister style filter that I can find.

I know that rubber fuel line is not desirable in the engine compartment, but how much is too much? I see online that the fuel filters typically come 2 small lengths of rubber tubing. Should I extend the metal tubing most of the way to the carb to avoid using the nearly 2 feet of rubber fuel line there now?

Just from the standpoint of safety I'd replace the rubber hose. Some states that have inspection would fail it because of that. It's a fire hazard.
The easiest way to do it is get a length of stiff wire and bend it to the shape you want for the fuel line. Measure how long it is. Get a length of 5/16" steel brake line from the parts store a little longer. Its annealed steel tubing so its relatively easy to bend. Bend the tubing to match your pattern.
The brake line comes with a regular nut on one end and a long nut on the other. I'd put the long nut end towards the carb. so you can cut that end off, trim to length. You can use a flaring tool to put a slight bulge in the end for the rubber hose to slip over.
