I know you will all say go for the 351w.
but i am looking at modding a 302.
with flowtech longtube headers, msd 6al, 9mm wires, tfi coil, and msd tfi wiring harness.
have removed the smog pump and am removing the egr.
Am looking for a cam for the truck. and injectors, and other parts
have $1300 budget what are your inputs.
truck is a 92 f150 4x4 with e4od trans.
And please no flak from emissions.
your truck is most likely SD,so there are only a few cams that will work with the SD system. a quick search on here or in the small block engine forum will give you the info you need.
The 302 is a great engine to mod , lots of aftermarket parts , anything you can do on the exhaust side like headers & custom freeflowing exhaust will help alot , the MSD coil , cop , wires & autolite coppers will help to , When you open up the exhaust you will want to open up the air intake , the stock air box & air filter are restictive , AEM , AFR , K&N make aftermarket filters that flow much better , & gearing is also important on a 302 since they make there power in the higher RPMs ...The 302 HO cams are easy to come by & still SD friendly ....Lew
I was using the K@N FIPK for 4 years, then pulled it out and put the stock air box back on with the 300 I6 intake tube and gained some TQ back, this was with shorty hedders high flow cats and MSD cap fms wires. 15/16 MPG, When its rebuild time then ill play with new heads !!
Lew is right, there is a ton of aftermarket support for the 5.0.
I am running the MSD coil and cap and rotor with the stock distributor. I also have Ford Racing wires. Stick with Motorcraft or Autolite plugs. You do not need the MSD box though.
I'll second what Jason said. I did the same thing. I am also considering what heads to go with as I will be doing a rebuild of the 302 in the future.
Anything you can do to help the exhaust flow better will help. I would go with a good straight through muffler and 3 inch single exhaust after the Y pipe. You can also get a new Y pipe and go with 2.5 inch. If you have to pass sniffer etc, then go with a high flow cat.
I would not waste any money on air filters though. If you want a high flow air filter then look at AFE or AEM. They offer dry filters not oiled ones.
By the way, stay away from throttle body spacers, chips snake oil plugs etc.
