Alright well I found my coolant leak. It's coming from one of the bolts holding the water pump on. Specifically if your looking at the engine it's the bolt around the middle of the left side of the pump right under a water hose. It looks as if there is a new gasket behind the pump. So, I'm assuming it has been replaced. I put a torque wrench on it and went about a half turn till 15 ft/lbs.
What I'm kinda asking is has anyone else seen this problem before, and if so will this fix my leak or do you think something else could have messed up?
I'm not sure how long it has been leaking for. I have only had the truck for about a month now and it's leaked ever since then. I just thought it was strange that it was coming from a bolt hole, and not from the two mating surfaces. I pressure tested it that is definitely where the coolant is coming from.
i would get a new gasket and pull the pump off clean the surface good and put new gasket down and use some prematex for good measure on both sides of the gasket
What engine? I haven't replaced my waterpump on my 5.0 yet, but it's my understanding from a mechanic that [at least] the 5.0 has 2 longer bolts amongst the others for the w.pump, and they have a tendency to seize and break if they've been in a while.
So I hope it's not so, but perhaps the previous owner snapped a bolt that is now leaking?
It's got the 5.0 in it. The bolt didn't seem to be broken since I was able to torque it down, and i wasnt able to wiggle it like you can usually do with a broken bolt. I'm thinking whoever put the pump on didn't torque them, and left that one loose. It only leaks when it's cold, so I checked it this mornin and there was no coolant on the ground where there usually is. I'm gonna let it sit for the rest of the day just to make sure it stays cold to allow the leak to come back; if it does.
