I have a 2005 F350 6 Liter with about 60000 miles on it. When I am hooked to my trailer I can"t start off if I am on a hill or in soft ground. The truck just pulls down and will not move. Also if I put it in Low range 4X4 it still won"t move. I have to back down to level ground and get it moving and then it will go ok. What do you think would cause this.
Ok when I have a load on such as the stock trailer or 5th weel if I am starting out on a hill or in soft ground the truck won"t move and the tach will go up to about 1500 and just hold there. If I back down on the flat then it will start ahead and as the revs come up it will take off normal. Without a load the truck will be slow to start off but then it takes off like a rocket. With the load on and I want to pull out onto the highway I must make sure no one is comming as it is real slow to start off. It has a 5 speed automatic and once you are moving it acts normal. The oother thing that I notice is that the 4x4 low range just acts like the normal 4x4. It should be a low range but I can drive at highway speeds in low range just the same as in high range. This might be a differant problum than the slow start though. Hope somone can help before I take it to a dealer as it seems like you have to tell them what to fix!! Thanks
Sounds to me like you are getting really bad turbo lag. Some lag is normal with these trucks, but yours sounds worse than normal. That is why I asked what your boost gauge was showing. You have an '05, so you have a boost gauge, and you need to watch it to see what it is doing. No boost at low RPM means no power, but then when the boost comes on it takes off like a rocket. You might be experiencing a turbo with sticky vanes. You might also have a sticky EGR valve that won't close. Either way, you may see evidence on the boost gauge, so you can describe it to your diesel tech.
I will check my boost next time I have a load hooked on. I did have trouble with the boost going from 19 down to zero and back will traveling down the road. It quite compleatly when pulling a lon hill. I took it into ford and they replaced the turbo. It did keep doing it with the new turbo so I stopped at the next ford dealer and they replaced the EGR valve and that seemed to fix the turbo surging. But i could smell anti freeze after that and had to add some every day. So I stopped at the next Ford dealer where they replaced the head gaskets and installed new studs instead of bolts to hold the heads on. This all happened on a trip to Florida from Alberta last spring. I did notice the slow start up after this but didn't do anything about it until I got back home.
Something else I noticed today while looking at the engine. The EGR valve sure looks old. I wonder if they really did change it or just clean it. They sure did charge me for a new one. I think it was over $300.00.
I was going to say turbo lag as well, but this seems more than normal. My old 7.3 experiences this, but it basically goes away once everything warms up. On a cold morning, I had better not need to get out of anyone's way...it just doesn't want to do it. Once the engine warms up a bit though...man it's quick.
I am in Sundre Alberta. What area dealer do you use? I have been having a hard time finding one that I thought I could put my trust in. I have some real bad experances with them. I also have a 7.3 and it has well over 300000 with very little trouble. All I have had to do with it was change the o rings on the injectors. Also had a fuel leak on top of the engine when on a trip to the coast. Stopped in Salmon Arm and they changed the fuel pump for a $999.00. Went on my way only to find fuel still leaking. I carried on out and back with the leak and when I got back went on this form and found that there is a problum with the o rings on the side of the fuel filter and the new diesel. I replaced them myself cost of repair about $2.00. That is jusy one of the reasons why I don"t have much faith in Ford dealers.
Cochrane has a good ford dealer (never used them except for a flash but friends have had good experiences with them)as well as a good diesel shop but I cant remember the name off the top of my head but he knows the powerstrokes.Erols is the name of the shop they have been very good to friends that I have sent that way.

Did you call and talk to them about it? They should have made that right.
Sounds like your turbo vanes are sticking open. Try this, unplug the wire that connects to the VGT actuator on the turbo and see if that makes any difference. If no or very little change, your turbo is sticking and needs cleaning or replacement. If the vanes are not closing, it will cause it to build very little boost and power under about 2300 RPMs, above which it will take off like a rocket.
