I tow a 8.5x20 trailer regularly and I'm looking for some more grunt. I've been doing some reading on here and wearing out the search function. I tow in 4th gear which puts me about 2900 rpm at 60mph. 5th gear is not tow friendly with this trailer. I was considering ratio rockers, a cam, maybe some headers, etc. I don't want to break the bank and I realize this isn't a powerstroke but surely I can wake it up a bit. Racing season is about over so I can have the truck down for some time with no problem. Thanks, Matt
Replace the full exhaust system with whatever you like as long as you include headers of some type, longtubes are best for lowend grunt but shorties a big step up from the logs too. Then add 1.7 rockers and you should have a pretty decent improvement all combined.
I'm holding out on changing gears. I may put a Cummins in it some day. I'm going to look into the ratio rockers and exhaust and see what that does for me. Any need to replace valve springs? It's not going to see high rpm.

I did what this guy said right here. If I could kiss him I would. He advised me, shared pics, helped me with removing my secondary air injection, overall a great help.
Best mod to the truck. I have 4.10's already, so it pulls great for what it is.
I picked up some Pacesetter's (has EGR port on them), they came with reducers, I got 2.5" tubing, 2 into 1 (2.5" dual into 3" single) Y piece, some 3" tubing from Summit Racing, then a new cat and muffler from Bear River Converters. Got some Earl's performance gaskets and stage 8 locking header bolts too.
Cut n' welded it all here at the house, bought the clamps and hangers local.
Big difference in how she runs.
Next are the 1.7's for me on my 96'.
I would do the exhaust, then go for gears if I were in your shoes.
In this case I have to favor power upgrades over gears, the ZF has a really shallow overdrive ratio compared to the automatics so 4.10's will just destroy fuel milage. 3.55's in the pumpkins isn't too bad he just needs to uncork the beast under the hood.

You are a good source of knowledge and I defer to you Paul. I was thinking he was set on getting gears already.
I know the 4.10's have helped me alot in the pulling department, but I do have a auto trans.
Those 1.7's are good to go on my 96' as a bolt on yes? No worries on springs?
On mine, I got a new EGR tube, and the Pacesetters have the port welded on. New tube was $33 bucks or something at Auto Zone. Just bolted it all up with some anti seize.
I did follow Conanski's advise and pull the 2nd AIR injection though.
Been a while but I'm ready to get my truck ready for towing season. Does anyone know if the Summit G9036 headers have the emissions connections on them for the EGR etc. I was also looking at the Hooker 6912HKR but I cannot determine if either of these has the EGR fittings.
