hello, i have a question. i have been racking my brain tryn to figure out why i have broken 5 flexplates in the last 3 months. i put an early 99 powerstroke out of a 6 speed in my late 99 f350 dually. its a 2wd automatic. since i have installed the engine i have replaced flexplate after flexplate. can anybody PLEASE help me? lol i am all out of options and ideas.
I've seen broken flexplates before. Usually it is caused by a misalignment of the engine and transmission. Something is preventing the trans from mating squarely to the engine.

Hi Mark,
I just recieved my truck back from having the transmission rebuilt and 3 days later i am being towed back to the shop. They are telling me the flex plate is broken and was caused by old age. I am finding that hard to believe. I have been searching for possible causes and came across your post. Could this be caused by some fault of theirs?
Thanks in advance
Jim

The misalignments I've seen have been from machining problems on the case. I suspect there was a problem in production with either the front face of the trans or the rear face of the block. I have no data at all to back this up, it's just a suspicion. It's really hard to determine this, you can't see it by looking, you need some very sophisticated measuring tools.
This was the original transmission that was rebuilt. They removed and re-installed. Could it have been over torqued or some other mistake made during installation. I'm having a hard time excepting the fact that 3 days out of the shop an item they had involvement in fails all on its own. If it had been an item elsewhere fine.
Thanks for suggesting that. Not sure. I'm meeting them in the morning at 8:AM to unload my equipment so they can get it on the lift. I'm going to ask them to call me when they have it exposed. Anything i should look for about this or some other item?
