The part I don;t like is they can come off on their own - as I said my fan blade is braced to the water pump, and when I was taking the fan of for a water pump replacement (preventive maintenance) one I took the braces off I found out my fan clutch still somehow managed to break loose - in other words if it weren't for them braces it would have eaten up the radiator alive one beautiful day. There is plenty of red loctite on there now, that should keep the monster at bay, plus the braces are back on as well...
Laugh all you want, but I get all the cooling I need and then some
I'm sure ya do, especially if its the big 37"(?) radiator, wasn't laughin at the idea just didn't understand the execution of locking it in until you explained it more. I checked by hand after the motor was warmed up and turned off and mine feels engaged
so LCAM, your not worried about the excessive work your thermostat is being put though just trying to keep your engine at operating temp? over cooling your engine is terrible on performance, mpg and wear on parts. not to mention the excessive work your engine has to do to make up for the power loss from the fan. why not just spend the 150 and get a new clutch fan? or better yet, pay for shipping and i will give you one of mine.
What excessive work for the thermostat? I have a spare wheel in front of the grille man, I have very little air pushed through the radiator at speed... There ain't no overcooling here, I can assure you, she warms up very quick and stays nice and hot even when idling low outside in the dead cold of winter.
Fan drag, sure it may kill 10 hp, big deal - truck is slow to begin with, besides I ain't in no rush to get nowhere and I never felt any difference in pulling power between the fan free and locked - not to mention that even with the fan locked the engine is still fully capable of pulling a gooseneck with two small cars on it so fast the speedometer needle points at the gear select indicator, lol.
Fuel economy don't seem to suffer either, it was 20 unloaded at cruise speed before I lock it and it stayed 20 at cruise speed unloaded afterwards. Loaded to capacity (slightly over 1 ton in the bed) she gets 15 mpg at cruise speed, which is still more than many folks here get when empty...
Bottom line theories are one thing, but individual applications may be totally different, what I have works just fine for me.
