ZF Transmission question
Can you use a ZF S-42 out of a 88 F-250 7.5 liter as a replacement for a 93 ZF S-42 on a 7.3 IDI? if not what is different about them?

The bellhousing is different. It won't bolt to the engine. The gear ratios are different, too, but that's a minor issue.

You need a ZF5 from a 7.3 Diesel

A S-42 from a 88-95 will work, or a S-47 from a 96-97

if i have a 4x4 can i use a zf from a 2x4?

What Helifixer said... you'd have to swap the tailshafts. Easier just to find the one you need.
