Air Filter Question

Curious - I just did my first oil/filter change on my 1999 F250 SD 4X4 and when I went to get a filter I came home with something that was much smaller than the one in the truck (so much for looking it up at the local parts store) - I pulled the one in the truck and it says it is FRAM CA 8269 but I do not think that is the correct filter now that I look at it because when I pulled the old/existing one out I noticed that the cover does not quite fit correctly on the filter housing.

The air filter cover does not quite fit and when I looked at the one in the Excursion there was a slight difference. They looked to be about the same size but I think the 8269 is just a bit thicker and larger and/or has just a bit different lip/seal around the filter media. I even tried the filter in the Excursion and I get the same thing - seems like it is thicker and I see that I cannot get the air cover back on with the CA 8269.

Doing some looking and it looks like the replacement may be the FA 1750 but want to make sure before I go off and buy any more. Seems that the local Pep Boys and Advance Auto do not carry the correct filter for this truck so I have to buy on line.

Soooooo - was wondering if anyone can confirm the filter I need and if there is a preference for FRAM or Motorcraft or any other. Would even entertain a K&N (not ready to put a 250 Cold-Air system on there just yet).

Don't get a K&N drop in filter. They are not good at sealing and let dust around it and into your turbo. Speaking of dust, if the filter doesn't seem to fit or the airbox doesn't snap down nice and tight, don't use it. I have a different filter on my truck so I can't chime in on what is the best stock drop in but I use Motorcraft on my other Ford vehicles in a stock airboxes. Hope this helps.

I agree with Chris, don't use a filter that doesn't fit/seal the stock air box properly. You don't want any dust or dirt to get into the turbo area. Before I upgraded to the AIS on my 2002 F350, I used to only buy the Motorcraft air filter which would fit the air box like a glove. You can get some good deals on the web if you want to buy a few at a time.

This is a picture that I took a while back of a Napa 6637 air filter installed in my truck.
You have to remove the factory air box for it to fit.

Your problem is ford had like a 1999 and a 1999.5 You need to know the manufacturer date to get the correct parts.

Your oil filter will say Ford Powerstroke right on the box. Motorcraft Oil Filter FL-1995 ( = to Fleetguard LF3630)

Air filter is FRAM - CA8925,CA8269,CA9400<- same size different styles. K&N 33-2248

I believe these are for the late models.

Am starting to think that there has been some "creative modification" going on here. Everything I see says that the filter should be the CA-8269 on the "early 99"/pre 12/98 version (mine is 09/98).

I think the fact that the air box is missing 2 of the clips is one thing but I can see the seal of the air filter with the air box lid installed and secured with 2 of the remaining clips (the very back one and the rear right side). In addition upon even further investigation I discovered that the air box is not actually bolted down using all the mounting points. So am starting to think that there has been some mixing and matching of parts here by a previous owner.

The CA-8269 fits nicely in the air box - but not in the 2000 Exc, and the one from the Exc. does not fit in the 99 250 SD.

So, I may have to look at doing an after market to get this squared away. I do not see a K&N setup for the "before 12/98", they list the 57-2530 as the setup for the "after 12/98" but I did see one add that listed the 57-2530 for all 99 250 SDs so am a little apprehensive on going that route.

That Riffraff filter - does it just attach by removing the air box and attaching that in it's place?

Any other recommendations for replacement air filter set ups?

Is that the same mounting setup as that Riffraff model mentioned?

Yes...basically the same thing......Do not buy a K&N filter. They are not good for diesels. They let too many dust particles through which will eventually dust your turbo.
You can install Clay's kit but you will need to remove the factory airbox. Then the filter will lay in that area as shown by Dan.
Let us know if you need help.

Can I use the existing intake "hoses" or do I have to fab something up?

Get the 6637 from riffraff for $29! It goes DIRECTLY to your existing hose. You just remove the box and the lid connected to the hose. EASY as that and a beaut! They last way longer for the price too! By the time youd change 2 flat filters you bought a big 6637 and it will last over and over! Get a cover for it if your in dusty muddy conditions.

Its so easy i bet my 5 year old nephew could do it!

I have the Ford AIS setup and like it a lot. No dust gets past it. However it's pricey compared to the 6637 that Clay (RiffRaff) offers.

[Ford AIS]

It does sound like someone was messing with your airbox and it needs to be replaced. Dirt in these turbos is not a good thing at all.

Sorry - newbe here - Clay?

Think I will run up to my local NAPA store here and see if I can pick up a 6637 for a quick bolt on fix, then do something more secure.
